POLICE are hunting for an attacker who knocked a man to the ground and stole his cash.

The 50-year-old victim left the Turkish Delight takeaway on the High Street, in Sandown, on the Isle of Wight, and began walking towards Pier Street.

He was struck from behind and fell to the pavement, never seeing his attacker.

He later discovered he was missing £35.

The robbery took place at about 10.45pm last night.

Detective Constable Peter Russell said: “This was an unprovoked assault where the victim was struck from behind.

"It is likely that the area would have been busy and I would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or knows who is responsible.

“I would like to remind people to be vigilant when out walking and to be aware of their personal safety.

"Keep valuables and money out of sight and where possible stick to busy or well lit locations if walking alone.”

Anyone with any information should contact Det Con Russell at Newport police station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
