A HAMPSHIRE woman was eaten by her own cats after her dead body lay undiscovered in her home for several weeks, an inquest heard.

Janet Veal was found in the kitchen of her isolated Ringwood home after neighbours raised the alarm, concerned that they had not seen her for a long time and mail was overflowing in the letter box.

Inside officers were met with a “distressing” scene with the 56-year-old’s body on the kitchen floor, with parts missing as a result of being “gnawed and eaten” by her animals that had been left without food for possibly months.

Southampton Coroner’s Court heard how PC Dave Ivey gained entry into the semi-detached home, The Holdings, in Crow Arch Lane, which was down a farm track, with nothing around it for 100 yards, by using a ladder to get in through an unsecured upstairs rear window.

As soon as he got inside it was clear it had not been aired for numerous weeks and all the rooms of the property were covered with items and rubbish making it impossible to see the floor.

When he went downstairs and entered the kitchen and living room it was immediately apparent that there were a number of dead animals, including a number of cats and a dog, as well as some that were still alive.

Coroner Keith Wiseman said: “These animals had been, the officer thought, confined in these two rooms downstairs for what may well have been a period of many weeks, stretching quite possibly into several months.”

It was in the kitchen, on the afternoon of April 4, that PC Ivey discovered the body of Mrs Veal, who was estranged from her husband, who left a year before.

Mr Wiseman added: “This too was a distressing experience because it was clear that certain parts of Mrs Veal’s body were missing and had, the officer formed the view, effectively been gnawed and eaten away by the animals.

“One can only imagine the difficulty with the scene the officer was having to deal with.”

Reading from her medical history it was clear that Mrs Veal, who was described as a recluse by her neighbours, suffered from various chest conditions over the years.

The post-mortem proved “extremely difficult” due to the extent of decomposition but pathologist Dr Vipul Foria concluded that the death was “possibly” due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Describing Mrs Veal as an animal lover, Mr Wiseman said: “Exactly what happened to render Mrs Veal unable to assist herself or get any kind of help is unclear. Obviously one or other of the chest conditions might have disabled her but it is not at all clear.”

Ruling a death from natural causes Mr Wiseman added: “There is no indication otherwise and no suggestion, if I can go to the complete extreme, any suggestion that she had been in any way attacked by the animals while she was alive.

“Given the background history and findings I am prepared to find on the balance of probabilities this was sadly a natural death that led to really very untoward consequences because of the inability of Mrs Veal to get any assistance for herself and to be confined in the way that she was in this property with a number of animals that had not been fed for quite a long period of time.”

It's sad that she died but while the sight was no doubt visually unappealing, I'm not sure the fact that her body was eaten is particularly distressing. It's all perfectly natural and at the end of the day, we're all worm food anyway (cremations notwithstanding).

No, i am just making a point. If you see post overflowing or milk building up outside a house of a vulnerable person then wouldn't you raise an alarm?

Also it says semi detached, i just cant understand why she wasn't spotted sooner.

I was not trying to be funny, I just don't understand how she was left so long, its very sad.

Sad story for both, the lady and the pets. The headline is way over the top and factually incorrect, it gives the impression that she was actually eaten by her cats (i.e cause of death). I suppose that's how the media attract readers?
I thought the DE would have been a tad more sensative under these circumstances?

No one will ever know what happened. Condolences to the lady's family and at least some of the pets would be able to be rehomed.

In future some community spirit is in order. She was someones daughter, someones sister and someones neighbour. People should get off their iphones and live in the NOW, be aware! There were plenty of people who should've spotted the signs- and maybe if they had, she could've been saved before she died.

From now on lets not point the finger, but lets change our attititude. We cant bring anyone back, but we CAN make sure that we keep an eye on our neighbours and treat others the way we would want to be treated. So, we should all learn from this to be a better neighbour. Those poor animals and that poor lady! :( No one should have to be deserted in their time of need!

I've worked in postal delivery jobs, and you get to know a round. However, places overflowing with mail are usually either abandoned, repossessed, or the owners have gone on holiday. Milk building up on the doorstep would be a more worrying sign. If something seems wrong, I check with the occupier or neighbours. People are usually around in the neighbourhood, too, especially in hot weather. Usually it's nothing to worry about, sometimes problems are found & resolved, usually without too much chasing around. I've visited a lot of doors in a lot of towns, and I haven't experienced anything like this. It is rare.

People living on their own in isolated places and with pets living in their houses should ALWAYS be aware that this could be a potential problem. That's why i have a daily check-in with a friend (phone-call or voicemail) - if they don't get one, and I don't respond to their phoning, they will ask a neighbour to go round. I do this as much for my dog as for me - couldn't bear the thought of him getting terribly distressed and dying through dehydration, terrible way to go. Think, people!

My condolences to this lady's family and friends.

Front page headline:

Reclusive woman eaten by her cats

Once you click the 'Headline' you see a sub-heading, which is what you are referring too. Its irrelevent to my point whether you would believe it or not, I would of thought most of the stories here are true, wouldn't you? This sort of story wouldn't fall under the category of speculative journalism. My point is for family or close friends of the deceased it isn't very sensative under the circumstances.

The above sarcasm on my last post was a response to Jayne388 giving her opinion that *I* was not safe to eat...it seems a bit sick to even talk about who might or might not be attractive to an animal to eat though! It also seems insensitive to her family and friends...whether or not an animal would like to eat *me* seems a ridiculous thing to even be discussing and as anyone knows, a starving animal would eat anything they could to survive as would a human. It's not called "survival mode" for nothing! However, I dont think those type of comments are appropriate considering the delicate nature of this situation.

I applaud the police who did an awesome job in extremely traumatic conditions.

People are right. I'm spending too much time here and getting too involved. Time to go before I'm kicked out ! Only meant to stay for a couple of weeks, just to try out this posting lark.

It was never personal, Mrs Pepperpot. Just a bit of matchplay to liven up what can be a very dull forum. But I have no right to assume that initiative.

Good luck, happy posting, and don't get entangled with the trolls. Bye.

Terribly sad, poor woman and poor animals she left behind. The Daily Echo should disable comments on articles like this. There's far too much disrespectful banter and trolling. Clearly, some people have nothing better to do than sit on this website all day and think of rude things to say.

I am finding it beyond belief that someone could make the excuse that they are trying to liven up a "very dull forum" by being absolutely rude and predjudiced towards anonymous people they do not know anything about and making judgements based on no facts. Reading about the sick trolls on the internet who have hounded teenagers to death I was so shocked that anyone could be this evil. But coming on this forum has shocked me.

If adults are capable of such malevolence as Jayne388 has demonstrated, then no wonder teenagers think nothing of goading others to death. Parents set an example to their children and if the children are malicious chances are, they learnt it at home.

All I can say is, you never know is someone is suicidal. We are each responsible for what we say and how we say it to others and as we dont know WHO we are speaking to on a forum like this, I would think it best to err on the side of caution and treat others with the kindness and respect you would like to be treated with.

"Matchplay" I read....its very difficult to find the words to adequately explain my shock at such malice to complete strangers. Being a kind person I am often suprised when others dont share my care for others. Im stunned at the level of trolling that goes on here even in the three days since registering!

Let us not forget the nature of this story and have some respect for the dead- AND the living!

Of course she will, just under a new login name (which I think will be the 4th, or 5th). A very angry and frustrated person with too much time on their hands - unable to enjoy it the way they would have liked. I'm sure someone will be saying 'forum time' pretty soon, she won't be able to keep away. Once a troll, always a troll.

Now this is interesting. After Billy The Kid was banned from posting last year, I came back straight away (I had not been banned myself) to see what people were saying. And here it is again : the stuff of legends ! The rumour and dubious anecdote machine has been started up ! Malicious gossip is available via Rich The Stitch.

Rich The Stitch is posting, as facts, information he could not possibly obtain. How does he know whether or not Jayne has more than one name ? How would he get that information ?

Does he know Jayne personally ? How would he know if she was a "very angry and frustrated person with too much time on their hands" ? Does he have her diary ? Does he know her friends ?

How would he know whether or not she is enjoying her life "the way they(she) would have liked" ? Were has she said she is not enjoying her life the way she would have liked ?

He is right about one thing : she has found posting on a forum quite addictive. I think she made some reference to that some time back by making a little joke about "Jayne's addiction", which was/is the name of a pop music band.

Then of course there is the definition of "troll" and "trolling". You can be guilty of trolling, without necessarily being a troll. It is all about intent, which again Rich could not know without knowing Jayne personally. There is, of course, the problem of over-using the word, where it is used to describe someone who has simply disagreed with another.

If you know Jayne, personally, Rich, tell us. What colour is her hair ? Eyes ? Is she able-bodied, or does she have disabilities ? is she a heterosexual or gay ? If you knew her, you would know these things.

I would suggest that, in the light of the fact that he does not know Jayne, what he has written can be no more than malicious rumour. It makes him something of a cheap gossip.

In fact, Rich The Stitch fits the definition of a troll exactly.

Just because a post is made at 3.00am does not mean that the person concerned is exclusively occupied with this website.

It's none of your business, but we are an acoustic blues band who play just for fun anytime we feel like it, night or day. Jayne is a blo ody good singer and guitarist. I can't sing, but I'm fairly good on rhythm guitar. When we're taking a break, having a drink maybe, someone might say "Let's have a look at what the loonies have been saying tonight." Invariably the word used is much stronger ! If Jayne has been wasting time on you during the day we usually tell her off !

You losers just do not have a clue how the other half lives, do you ?

Of course your jealousy at not having a more interesting life yourself will force you to disbelieve what I have said.

Still, now Jayne has gone cold turkey on this backwater dump site, we won't be bothering to see what sort of "sour grapes " reply you make.

Consider yourselves no longer needed. Game over.
