Mountain bike champ back in the saddle after £14,000 theft
WHEN £14,000 worth of biking equipment was stolen from his home, his career was left in tatters, but a year later former world champion mountain bike rider Grant Fielder is making a comeback as he prepares to compete again.
The 30-year-old from Romsey will fly to Canada this weekend to take part in the biggest event on the offroad biking calendar, Bearclaw Invitational on Vancouver Island, which sees the world’s top 25 riders compete to be crowned international champion.
He has had to buy four new bikes and train harder than ever to be able to compete once more after he was forced to drop out of all his competitions after the theft last summer.
But the driving force behind his comeback was the birth of his first child in November.
Grant said: “With Poppy being born it has made me not want to be beaten.
“I have been working incredibly hard with my older bikes to maintain my profile.
“I have had to train harder this year to make up for the theft.
“The actions of one stupid idiot managed to ruin my year.”
One of his stolen bikes has been recovered in Hereford by the police, but the rest of his equipment remains missing.
