Burglary bid caught on camera
2:08pm Friday 23rd August 2013 in News
A BURGLAR was caught on camera before breaking into the home of a woman as she slept.
The Botley householder woke up thinking she had left the door on the latch, only to discover it had been forced by Bernard Hartnett.
Prosecutor Gavin Sumpter told Southampton Crown Court how a security camera had captured Hartnett on the driveway for about 20 minutes trying to open a car door and walking around before he pulled a cable from the CCTV which he then pointed downwards.
“It would have taken an element of planning, walking down a quiet road to try and carry out the attempted burglary,” he observed.
Harnett, 19, of Wildgreen Lane, Hedge End, received an eight-month suspended sentence coupled with 12 months’ supervision and an order for 100 hours’ unpaid work after admitting the burglary bid.
Recorder Michael Parroy QC, passing sentence, said: “You came within a whisker of going to jail now.”
Audrey Archer in mitigation said Harnett had been binge drinking all day and could not remember going to the house and trying to break in.
