Leisure centre deal extended
A NEW deal will kick start £200,000 refurbishment works at a Southampton leisure centre.
Southampton City Council chiefs have agreed to extend a deal with Solent University to manage St Mary’s Leisure Centre.
The extension of the deal until 2017 means the university will now carry out a complete overhaul of its first floor, with a host of new activities planned for it.
The university has run the centre in St Mary’s Road since 2010, but its previous deal was due to run out next year.
The city council cabinet has this week agreed an extension of the agreement until August 1, 2017, with the option of an extra year.
The university has already refurbished the facility’s gym and free weight area and spent £150,000 on new equipment.
Work to refurbish the rest of the centre will begin next month and will include new fitness equipment and a sports physiotherapy and massage suite.
A newly-refurbished space will be used for activities, including spinning, zumba, table tennis and martial arts.
Phil Green, Director of Sport Solent, said: “Southampton Solent University is delighted to have the contract to manage St Mary’s extended. “Our shared focus with colleagues at the city council and the capital investment we have made confirms our commitment to improve the leisure experience for our staff, students and the wider community.”
City council economic development and leisure boss Matt Tucker said: “Solent University is the main user of St Mary’s Leisure Centre and has done a good job in managing it since it took over in August 2010 without costing taxpayers a penny.
“They have encouraged local community use, kept admission prices as low as possible and offered a range of concessions. On this basis we are very happy to extend the contract.”
