Rape police release CCTV after attack on West Quay Road in Southampton
THESE are CCTV images of revellers detectives say could hold vital clues into snaring a rapist who attacked a young woman in Southampton.
Police launched a manhunt after the 20-year-old victim was raped while walking along West Quay Road in the early hours of Saturday.
She initially stopped to speak to five men near to Ikea before walking towards the De Vere Hotel.
One of the men followed her before grabbing her, pulling her into a bush and raping her.
The man is in his early 20s, about 5ft 5in and of muscular build with a French crop-style haircut and a trimmed medium-brow beard.
He wore dark-blue skinny jeans and a T-shirt.
Detectives want to trace five men walking along West Quay Road 30 minutes before the incident - between 3am and 3.45am - who may have hung around, plus a man walking towards Ikea with a rucksack seen looking across the road a number of times as the victim crossed it.
They also want to trace two men believed to be part of a group with two women and another man, plus two women and a man seen walking towards the De Vere Hotel.
Detective inspector Dave Nealon said: “These are distant shots but we believe those in the pictures will probably recognise themselves.
“They were all in the area around the time or shortly before the incident.
“We have no reason to think any of them were involved but it is likely that at least some of them will have seen the victim and may have important information which could help us find who carried out this nasty attack.
They also want to speak with two men who stopped and helped the victim after the incident and a man seen cycling in the area.
Witnesses should contact him at Southampton CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
