1.5m people flock to Whiteley shopping centre
A HAMPSHIRE shopping centre will reach 100 days in business today having seen 1.5m visitors so far.
The £84m Whiteley Shopping Centre opened in May and bosses say they are pleased with the numbers of visitor they are attracting.
Operations manager Darren Gooding said so far the shopping centre was on target for where it wanted to be.
When it opened close to 50 shops, cafes and restaurants were involved providing around 1,000 jobs.
Occupancy rate of the shops is currently 95 per cent – slightly higher than it was on opening with the arrival of the Phase Eight store.
It is hoped that the centre, off Whiteley Way, near the M27, will be fully occupied by Christmas, with several names interested in the remaining space, said Mr Gooding.
He added: “We’re very happy with the number of people visiting us.
“People are spending and with the right retail mix we have I think there’s a good variety for customers to come and enjoy.
“The restaurants are doing very well indeed so again that’s very encouraging to see the leisure option being taken up by customers.”
Further plans are in hand for a striking oval glass building to house a new restaurant and the Cineworld nine screen cinema, both set to open in the early part of next year.
Mr Gooding put the centre’s appeal down to its convenience.
“We’re in a good location, in a nice area and it’s a nice brand new shopping centre,” he added.
