GIG OF THE WEEK: Ben E King and Jimmy James and The Vagabonds
SOUL legend Ben E. King just lets his audience do the singing as he launches into his iconic song Stand By Me.
And that is what he will be doing when he stops off at The Concorde, Eastleigh tonight on his nationwide tour which has been playing to packed houses.
The 74-year-old American superstar will be sharing the stage with fellow soul legend Jimmy James and The Vagabonds for a tantalising, blockbusting double bill of soul music at the Stoneham Lane club.
Jimmy James’ connections with the Southampton area’s vibrant soul scene stretches back to the 60s, including appearing last year to a packed house at The Concorde After having two number one records in Jamaica Jimmy and his Vagabonds came to England and became one of the hottest live soul acts in the UK.
The band’s line-up has changed many times over the years.
But their 72 year-old lead singer is still belting out the hits which took the charts by storm such as Red Red Wine, I’ll Go Where the Music Ta kes Me and Now Is The Time.
And Jimmy is over the moon at sharing the stage with his mentor and idol Ben E. King.
After seeing one of his shows about a year ago he decided to record an album of the former Drifter lead singer’s songs. Ben E. was delighted with the idea and said that no one had paid him that sort of tribute.
