Nine-year-old dances her way into the history books in world contest
A HAMPSHIRE starlet danced her way into the history books at a world championship event in Glasgow – at the age of just nine.
Latrice Bannister became one of only two children – defined as dancers under the age of 12 – to have qualified in all of her events during the UDO World Championships at the Glasgow SECC.
The nine-year-old, who attends Mansbridge Primary School in Swaythling, Southampton, battled through to the finals of all categories that she entered, which were the Hip Hop, Locking, Popping and U10 Solo as crowds cheered on the emerging dance prodigy.
Her passion for dance began at the age of seven, where she attended a dance event and StudioSO in Southampton and was so impressed by what she saw that she ran over to the event’s organiser, Helena Boyce, and begged for her to teach her to dance.
Mum Ellonie Bannister, said: “She was fabulous, and she made history by being one of only two children to have won all of her dance battles when she was up against dancers that looked older than 14.
“The crowd were so impressed, astonished and made really loud cheers for her.
“She is a phenomenal dancer and when she was young I always noticed that she had rhythm, when she was at the stage of crawling, she used to get faster to the beat of the music while I was playing guitar.
“Dancing runs in our family, her grandmother is Cuban and my brother, her uncle Rudy Bannister, was an amazing dancer.
“She also has a stunning voice, one that sounds really jazzy like Amy Winehouse and she is outstanding at playing the guitar.
“In fact she is so good at guitar that, aside from excelling above all of her classmates, she has been rewarded a Con Brio award by the Southampton Music Services, who are part of the Southampton City Council.
“She has been trained by Helena at StudioSO and she owes a lot to her, she really has been trained well by talented teachers.
“She’s very friendly and she loves to dance, she’s always smiling and she’s just so confident.”
