Charlotte Duggan had head shaved to raise money for Comic Relief
SHE has been the inspiration for many a close shave this year – and pop star Jessie J has now motivated a Basingstoke schoolgirl to lose her locks for a good cause.
Charlotte Duggan, from Beggarwood, had her long brown hair first cut and then shaved to just a few millimetres at Toni & Guy, in Festival Place, surrounded by family and friends.
Charlotte, a pupil at Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, in Wessex Close, said she was motivated to have the close cut to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign charity by Jessie J, right, who had her head shaved live on television for this year’s Comic Relief.
The 12-year-old chose to support a breast cancer charity as her grandmother successfully fought the disease after being diagnosed nine years ago.
As the locks tumbled off, Charlotte said: “I’m not really worried about what people’s reaction will be. People can think what they want.”
She said she hadn’t had a proper haircut and had only had her hair trimmed during the last four years.
Charlotte’s mum Kerry, 31, dad Matt, 32, and more than 20 of her friends and family were at the hair salon to show their support during the head shave.
And the good news is that Charlotte has already exceeded her fundraising target of £1,000 and donations are still being collected.
Kerry, who works as a school cook, said: “She only decided to get her head shaved a few weeks ago, and we told her she would have to raise £1,000 before she went ahead, to give her something to aim for.
“Within a week or so, things really started to pick up and she didn’t take very long at all to raise all the money.
“She said she was determined to do it and has been really excited about it. I just thought: ‘You’re your own person – you can make your own decision’.”
Although Charlotte shed a few tears as her locks were chopped off, she said she was pleased to have gone through with the head shave and is delighted with the amount of money she has raised.
