Countess offers advice after Downton Abbey gaffes

IT is enough to make Lady Grantham blush and leave Carson speechless.
The chatelaine of Highclere Castle has revealed that producers of ITV drama Downton Abbey have committed a string of etiquette gaffes when filming at her home in Kingsclere on the Hampshire border.
The Countess of Carnarvon has launched a blog offering advice on how to run a stately home after claiming show producers fail to set the dinner table correctly and do not cast enough servants.
Lady Carnarvon, the wife of the 8th Earl of Carnarvon,, said: “Glasses are set back to front and things are set wrong.
“It’s the little details.”
She added: “I do feel, after all that it’s my dining table and obviously wouldn’t set it like that.”
She also says a stately home of Downton Abbey’s size would in the early 20th century would employ 60 staff – rather than the 12 employed in the third series.
Tips include: - Setting cutlery from the outside in, beginning with breadknife and working through each course to cheese.
- Arranging the wine glass and water tumbler to the top right of each setting.
- Ensuring butlers wear white gloves to prevent fingerprints on glasses It also includes advice on how to cook for 30 hungry beaters and which position to place a Bishop at the dinner table.
