IT IS a country torn by war as millions seek escape.
And the plight of Syrian refugees has touched the hearts of a Hampshire Islamic society.
The ISOC, Islamic Society of Southampton, have raised £4,017.29 to help the refugees of Syria.
They appointed their new president, Hisham Alghamdi, at the beginning of June and since his appointment he has helped the society to raise the cash.
To raise the money, some of the group’s 300 members would stand by the entrance of its base at the Cube campus in Southampton University’s SU building and hold buckets seeking donations at its weekly prayer session.
Help for refugees in Syria adds to a list of help the ISOC have provided, having raised money in the past for Bangladesh during the collapse of the Savar building in April this year, Palestine, Burma and other Muslim communities around the world.
Hisham said: “We really want to help the refugees because they are leaving Syria with no money and it is awful. It’s a really big war and people really need to be helped because people are getting hurt.
“If we give them this money then they might just have enough money to get some clothes, food and other things to continue their life.”.
The money raised goes towards Syria Relief, Islamic Relief, Human Concern and Syrian Orphans.
