Man charged over murder of retired police officer Stanley Carter in Hampshire
A 49-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a retired police officer in Hampshire.
Stephen Cowdrey is accused of killing Stanley Carter at his home in Greenwood Avenue, Cosham, Portsmouth, between September 11 and 16.
He will remain in custody tonight to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
A post mortem examination has been carried out to establish the cause of death but Hampshire police say they are not in a position to release the preliminary results.
A force spokesman said: ''Inquiries in the community are ongoing to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the death, particularly any suspicious behaviour or disturbances in Greenwood Avenue between Friday, September 13 and Sunday, September 15, 2013.''
The body of Mr Carter was found by officers on Sunday night after police received information about his death.
Cowdrey, of St Augustine Road, Southsea, was arrested at Portsmouth Central Police Station shortly afterwards.
