Tests reveal gas at centre of shopping centre chemical drama
11:05am Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
THE chemical released in a leak at one of Hampshire's biggest shopping centres has been confirmed as carbon dioxide.
Hundreds of shoppers and staff had to be evacuated from the Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer store in Hedge End after the alarm was raised when people started feeling ill at around 5pm last night.
Firefighters last night managed to source the leak to a freezer containing frozen food inside the Sainsbury's store.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the leak was from the cooling system in the refrigerator.
She said people were taken to hospital as a precaution but the gas coming out was non-hazardous.
