Fire crews deployed to Southampton University after experiment sparks alert
7:50am Friday 20th September 2013 in News
A FULL scale emergency was declared this morning over fears a university experiment had sparked a blaze on the campus.
Dozens of firefighters were deployed to the University of Southampton as well as paramedics as a hazardous materials incident was declared.
The call came in just after 6am and left University Road, a busy thoroughfare during rush hour, completely closed.
Five pumps, a special equipment unit and an aerial ladder platform to deal with the high-rise building, were all sent to the scene from fire stations across the city.
However fire chiefs have now confirmed that the incident has been scaled down and it was in fact “very minor” and involved a chemical reaction in a cupboard or enclosed cabinet, following a lab experiment that was carried out overnight.
