Hampshire endurance swimmer Anna Wardley begins Isle of Wight challenge
HAMPSHIRE endurance swimmer Anna Wardley has begun her bid to go solo and non-stop around the Isle of Wight today.
She started at 10.30am by touching the end of the pier at Ryde to signal the launch of her 56-mile circumnavigation of the island.
She headed west towards Cowes and the Needles. The swim is likely to take around 30 hours.
Anna, 37, from Gosport, is tackling a Five Island Swim Challenge to raise funds for the Samaritans, Sail Africa and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.
She has already swum around Dragonera, Spain, in May 2012, Portsea in June 2012 and Jersey in June this year.
However she was forced to abandon her attempt to swim solo and non-stop around the Scottish island of Tiree last month after 22 miles of the gruelling 30-mile challenge. She has not ruled out making another attempt.
