Domestic row sparks suicide alert over M271 into Southampton

A DRAMA on a motorway bridge sparked the closure of one of Hampshire’s busiest roads today.
Police were forced to shut the M271 into Southampton after a man climbed on to the bridge and threatened to jump off.
It happened when he was in the middle of domestic dispute on the footbridge on the motorway near Redbridge roundabout.
Residents in nearby flats heard the row and alerted the emergency services.
Police immediately shut the motorway southbound and diverted traffic off at junction one.
They also called in a specially trained police negotiator who tried to coax the 20-year-old man from the bridge.
On lookers could see the man on the bridge with two women, a police officer and a paramedic.
The drama happened at about 6.54am and road was closed until 9am when the incident ended and the man was taken away by police.
One resident in nearby Redbridge Towers told the Echo the incident started just before 7am and that it was believed to be a domestic dispute.
He added that during the row a man had threatened to jump from the bridge and then police arrived.
