The incident ended at 9am when the man agreed to come off the bridge and was taken away by police.
A police spokesman said the man was detained for his own safetyand handed over to the city mental health teams.
Residents in nearby flats had raised the alarm after hearing the row and the man threatening to jump from the bridge.

“You don’t expect this kind of thing to happen.”
And Cuckmere Lane resident Simon Lodwidge said: “It’s unbelievable, it’s quite worrying.
“I haven’t seen anything like that happening round here before. I saw the ambulance and police cars and wondered what was happening.
