A YOUNG woman who was hit by a car and killed last night was seen standing in the middle of the road.
The woman pedestrian, who was in her 20s, died at the scene after she was in collision with a silver Volkswagen Golf on the A36 at Plaitford at about 11.15pm.
Witnesses at the scene are said to have described seeing the woman in the middle of the carriageway, which has a dip in the road, just before she was struck by the car near Romsey last night.
The woman, who has not yet been named, died at the scene.
Now Green King brewery, who own the Red Rover pub, has confirmed the woman was at the pub shortly before her death but did not release any further details.
Police closed the road for several hours over night while investigations into the crash continued. It was reopened at about 6am.
One resident has described the moment she realised the young lady had been hit outside her house.
Gabrielle Russell said: “It's so sad. I was watching TV. I heard a thud but thought nothing of it.
“The next minute there was an ambulance and blue lights.
“There was a man sitting there and he was very shaken up. I heard a woman saying that she did not stand a chance.
“The road was closed until 6am and the police were walking along with torches and have been here to see if we knew anything.”
Mrs Russell and her daughter say she heard witnesses say that the girl had been standing on the road.
She continued: “There were four cars stopped nearby. My husband was at work and he came back at 11.45pm and there were a few cars allowed through and he managed to get home.”
Officers spoke to a number of motorists at the scene of the accident but have appealed for any witnesses to contact the roads policing unit at Whitchurch on 101 quoting Operation Sub Division.
