Southampton Solent University students enjoy Big Night Out pub crawl through city
12:42pm Friday 27th September 2013 in News
IT IS regarded as the biggest night in freshers' week for Southampton Solent University students.
Thousands of young men and women donned white t-shirts and downed the booze to mark the university's students' union's Big Night Out (BNO).
An estimated 4,500 students were expected to take part in the event, which saw the new intake visit a number of venues in the Bedford Place, London Road, and Vernon Walk areas of the city.
While most of the revellers made the most of the night, others were caught urinating in public or vomiting in the street.
Many had also been seen 'pre-loading' - buying booze at local shops and downing them before heading out - despite being told not to by organisers.
By wearing a BNO t-shirt, which featured a list of the bars and nightclubs taking part, students could enter the nightspots for free.
They included Buddha Lounge, Roxx, Prohibition, Orange Rooms, Auro, Avondale House, Rhino, Junk, Revolution, and Oceana.
It comes after some bars were criticised for targeting students with special drink-deals, with shots as cheap as 80p on student nights.
However, during BNO, there was a minimum price of £2 per drink.
Organisers DBP, which has put together the university's roster of freshers' week events, focused on keeping students safe by appointing a team of security guards and medics to oversee the night.
A security briefing was held in Prohibition by Ryan Keary, of event organisers DBP.
He insisted “student safety is a priority” and said security guards would be maintaining a presence around the city centre's war memorials, adding a bus to treat injured or unwell students would be stationed nearby.
It was not long until Vernon Walk, the area which houses popular venues Orange Rooms, Prohibition, Buddha Lounge, and Tokyo, became a beehive of students wearing white t-shirts, many of which were modified and doodled on.
