Masterchef star in cafe opening
A SOUTHAMPTON-BORN Masterchef champion has come home to open a new community café.
Shelina Permalloo won the TV cookery competition in 2012, and showed off some of her skills as she opened the new café in Mansbridge.
Community volunteers worked alongside housing association Radian to create the new cafe, which has been created on the site of an empty shop.
The new facility in Westfield Corner is part of a new neighbourhood hub, and offers training and space for the whole community.
Shelina, who was born in Southampton and used to work for Radian, was on hand to cut the ribbon and officially open the new café.
She won Masterchef after impressing judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode with her menu including octopus on marinated fennel, a mutton curry and mango cannelloni.
And the former Richard Taunton College student, who has since published her first cookery book, Sunshine On A Plate, showed some of the skills that won her the title as she opened the new cafe.
She put on a cookery demonstration for a number of residents and Radian staff, and judged a ‘best sandwich’ competition.
Lilian Moore’s winning classic ham and egg sarnie will now appear on the cafe’s menu alongside some of Shelina’s own creations. She said: “Having grown up in Southampton and worked for Radian, particularly within the local community, I was delighted to have been asked to open the new community café and help with some of the judging. The Round About Café is a great example of community working and I wish everyone involved with it good luck.”
The launch event kicked off a week-long programme of events at the cafe, including a kids’ candy popshop from 3pm-4.30pm today, a session on how to make perfect sausage rolls from noon to 2pm tomorrow and a chance to see how to make Jamaican patties from noon to 2pm on Friday.
And it will provide ongoing training and work experience in catering and hospitality, tips on job searching and sessions on saving money, while small local businesses will also be able to use the venue. To find out more, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
