Go! Rhinos sculptures to go up for auction in Southampton
THEY may have charged out of the city, but now is your chance to keep the rhino legacy alive.
If you have been left pining for the colourful masterpieces that brightened up the city’s streets and parks this summer – fear not.
Because now you have the opportunity to own your very own piece of rhino history as the Go! Rhinos Charity Fundraising Auction gets ready to go live.
With all 36 life-sized sculptures ready to go home with the highest bidders, it is hoped the much-anticipated auction on October 30 will raise thousands of pounds for three charities.
Marwell Wildlife has been overwhelmed by the public’s love for the rhinos since they charged into the city in July so there are high hopes that some rhinos might go under the hammer for more than £2,000.
However, based on similar events in other cities, certain rhinos may sell for considerably more – including Erica, the only interactive rhino developed by the University of Southampton.
The money raised from the 36 rhinos a n d B u s i n e s s South’s mini rhino Rudy, will be split b e t w e e n Marwell’s conservation projects, Wessex Heartbeat’s HIGH 5 Appeal and The Rose R o a d Association.
K i r s t i e Mat h i e s o n , Go! Rhinos project manager, said: “The Go!
Rhinos Charity Fundraising auction is the grand finale to this fantastic project.
“We hope that the public dig deep to buy these magnificent sculptures.
“Not only will they be purchasing a unique piece of art but they will be helping to raise vital funds for three charities.
“It’s impossible to say which rhino will sell for the most.
Every member of the public who came into the Go! Rhinos HQ had a different favourite so I think it will be a surprise for everyone.”
All the rhinos will be displayed at Marwell Zoo from October 10 to October 14 for a special Rhinotastic Weekend to allow potential bidders to get a look at what’s on offer and discuss the auction with Kirstie.
If you are unable to make the event at the Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton, in person, don’t worry, bidders can register as a telephone bidder or place a proxy bid.
Tickets are £15. To apply for tickets and register as a bidder call Kirstie on 01962 777 931.
