Woman dies after disease spreads to kidney
11:27am Monday 7th October 2013 in News
A HAMPSHIRE woman died from an infection that spread to her kidney before causing the organ to fail, an inquest heard.
Lisa Mullaney, 32, who lived alone and suffered from schizophrenia, was found by her mental health carer in the floor of her home in Dapple Place, in Marchwood, on May 22.
Pathologist Vipul Foria, giving evidence, said his post mortem found evidence of an infection that began because of bleeding related to constipation before spreading up the urinary tract to the kidney.
Just under a fortnight before her death she had been diagnosed with constipation, the hearing heard, but after that she never went to her GP.
Dr Foria said the infection could have been stopped from spreading to a vital organ if it was picked up earlier. He said: “It could have been treated by anti biotics and could have been contained and would not not spread to the kidneys.”
Recording a verdict of natural death, Southampton Coroner Keith Wiseman said: “There comes a stage if someone does not recognise what’s happening and is soldiering on and does not identify what is creeping up on them, there would come a time when it is really serious.”
