Council makes decision on Saints' training ground plans
COUNCIL bosses have today made a decision on Saints' plans to increase the size of their training ground.
Civic chiefs have approved an application to build six new pitches and a 40ft dome on four fields south of the club's existing facility at Staplewood Lane, Marchwood.
The scheme aims to boost the youth academy and pre-academy and help Saints produce the footballing stars of tomorrow.
Proposals include an extra 108 parking spaces and floodlights at two pitches beside the A326 Marchwood bypass. The inflatable dome will cover one of the other pitches, providing players with somewhere to train in wet weather.
The scheme was approved at a meeting of the district council's planning committee.
Cllr Maureen Holding said: “It will do an awful lot to help young people with training. We do need facilities for youngsters.”
Cllr Tony Swain added: “They're a very successful club and are worthy of our support.”
But several members voiced concern about the potential impact of the proposal on people living in Marchwood Cottage, which is on the eastern edge of the site.
Planning officers said the scheme had achieved a “fair and reasonable balance” that met the requirements of the both the club and the occupants of the cottage.
