Despite being in the middle of filming an explosive storyline centred on his character Alfie Moon, EastEnders bosses have given him the day off work on Saturday so he can rock the stage of a massive charity concert in front of a crowd of 1,500 to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Port of Southampton.
He will headline the party featuring an array of local and national talent with his band The Prelude inside the QEII Terminal.
Speaking to the Daily Echo after a long day of filming, he said: “Everyone likes to come and see Alfie bang out a few tunes! It’s always great fun and I can’t wait to come to Southampton.
“There’s a fair bit of sitting around on set and it will be nice to get up, jump around and flex my vocal muscles.
“As a band we don’t usually get to travel that far out of London because of filming so close to Christmas; it’s very rare I’ll get the Saturday off.
“I’m not going to be rushing straight from the Queen Vic so it will be nice to take my time, come down before, go to the marina for something to eat and meet up with some friends in Southampton.
“I’m looking forward to that. I’ve been at the Mayflower theatre so many times and it will be good to go to some of the old haunts.
“I promise I won’t be wearing any flowery shirts though.”
The TV entertainer, whose career spans a number of musicals as well as a number one hit with Children in Need single I’m Your Man in 2003, said his set will include a range of popular hits and classics from Kings of Leon to Madness.
He said he’s even trying to persuade his on screen ex-wife Jessie Wallace (Kat Slater) to come along for the party.
“It depends on her filming schedule but I keep on at her. It would be great to pull her up on stage with me to do a tune.”
The audience will also be treated to a display of film and pictures from the port’s glorious 175-year history and one lucky guest will win a luxury cruise.
Tickets for the event cost £10 and all proceeds will go to the Port of Southampton’s charity for the year, the Hampshire-based Joe Glover Trust, which works with children suffering from cancer.
And for Shane, it’s vital as much money as possible is raised.
He said: “Being a father of five my heart goes out to anyone with children suffering from any illness.
I try to support as many cancer charities as possible.
“It’s a whole great show with a lot of really talented acts and local artists and we’ve got to make this a night to remember.”
Teasing Eastenders fans about a dramatic storyline he is currently filming, which he said involved Alfie and Roxy Mitchell’s wedding day, he said: “I don’t want to spoil it for the EastEnders fans but this is really big and if people get tickets for Saturday, I might just give some secrets away!”
