Dance floor begins to cave in at RoXX club during Story So Far gig in Southampton
HUNDREDS of people had to be evacuated from a Southampton gig last night after the dance floor started to cave in.
Music fans at the RoXX live music venue in Bedford Place were swiftly led out of the building after concerns that part of the main dance floor had begun to subside during the second song of The Story So Far.
The venue has now been closed as investigations get underway into what caused the collapse and owners have confirmed that it will not reopen until they are 100 per cent confident that the space is completely safe.
Fortunately, nightclub Unit came to the rescue last night and provided its live music room for the band to perform a 30-minute set for 150 of their fans, but as it is an over 18's only venue, those who were too young had to miss out.
However, those with tickets for last night's gig are now being offered the chance to see the American band tonight at their performance in Kingston, where anyone over the age of 14 will be allowed.
Owners of the RoXX have apologised “wholeheartedly” to ticket holders and said that work was carried out to reinforce the strength of the dance floor when their took over the venue in November 2012.
An official statement from the RoXX added: “We can confirm that RoXX was evacuated yesterday evening, when there was warranted concern that part of the floor had subsided on the main dance floor. This was done instantly as we were concerned for public safety. We apologise wholeheartedly to the ticket holders of the Storey So Far gig.”
It added: “The safety of our patrons and clientele is paramount to us.
“Regretfully we will be closed through the coming week while we investigate the problem. Structural reports and steel specialists have been commissioned this morning to rectify the problem.
“In addition, we have contacted Southampton building control and will liaise with them further.
“It is safe to say we will not reopen until we are 100 per cent confident that the space is completely safe to our customer's ongoing safety and wellbeing.”
Aura Bar, which is below RoXX in Banister Street, had to delay opening last night while the problem was investigated, but management of the bar have confirmed that there is no structural damage to Aura and it will be open as usual.
WrongWayRound Promotions, who promoted the gig have now announced that they are honouring Southampton tickets to the gig at McClusky's in Kingston.
Those who choose to take up this offer will not be eligible for refunds once they are announced.
