Two arrested after immigration raid on Indian takeaway
7:42am Thursday 10th October 2013 in News
IMMIGRATION officials raided a Hampshire restaurant last night as ministers passed landmark laws clamping down on illegal migrants.
Both Bangladeshi men aged 33 were detained pending removal from the country.
It comes as today the Home Office introduces new legislation to reform immigration laws, to crack down on those living in Britain illegally.
The Immigration Bill will stop migrants using public services where they are not entitled to do so, reduce the incentives which encourage people to come to the UK and make it easier to remove people who should not be here.
It will include a clamp down on people who try to stay in the country through sham marriages, require landlords to check the immigration status of their tenants and the introduction of a contribution to the NHS from temporary migrants.
One of the men detained in last night's raid was found to have overstayed his visa and the other was suspected of entering Britain illegally.
The business owner was served with civil penalty notice warning.
They are facing a £10,000 fine per worker unless they prove that they carried out the correct rightto- work checks.
The new reforms aim at providing a fair system for legal hardworking people while targeting those in the country illegally.
Measures include slashing the number of appeals, stringent checks on bank accounts and driving licences and clamping down on sham marriages.
Immigration Minister Mark Harper said: “The Immigration Bill will stop migrants using public services to which they are not entitled, reduce the pull factors which encourage people to come to the UK and make it easier to remove people who should not be here.
“We will continue to welcome the brightest and best migrants who want to contribute to our economy and society and play by the rules. But the law must be on the side of people who respect it, not those who break it.”
