Iconic dances from Dirty Dancing, Flashdance and Saturday Night Fever performed in Festival Place
SOME of the most iconic dances in cinema history were recreated in Basingstoke’s Festival Place.
Crowds gathered in the shopping centre throughout the weekend on October 5 and 6 to see performances from well-loved films including Dirty Dancing, Saturday Night Fever, Flashdance, Napoleon Dynamite, Strictly Ballroom and Pulp Fiction.
The Dance in Film event also featured a performance from Basingstoke boy band Concept, who took on a routine from film Step Up Revolution.
Cem Ahmet, a professional dancer and choreographer who has danced with big-name acts including Katy Perry and One Direction, choreographed the event.
Cem, who was also involved in the London Olympics 2012 closing ceremony, said he had enjoyed putting the show together.
He told The Gazette: “We chose the most iconic dances and there’s a real range of performances here today- there’s something for everyone.
“The crowds have been fantastic and have been really enjoying all of the acts. It’s really nice to be able to do something like this – it’s different from a lot of the work I do.”
He said that he choreographed most of the routines within a single day, saying: “Choreography is like writing – you can sometimes get a block and sometimes it all comes very easily. With this event, it all came together very quickly.”
Several professional dancers, mainly based in London, were recruited to perform the various routines.
The Dance in Film event was staged to launch the autumn season’s clothes, footwear and accessories which have arrived at Festival Place.
Steven Connolly, centre director at Festival Place, said: “The weekend was a huge success, with crowds lining up to catch all the performances.
“It really announced the new fashion collections with a bang and made for a shopping weekend with a difference, which is exactly what we wanted to do.”
