Arrest after theft of hundreds of birds
A MAN has been arrested in connection with an investigation into a gang who stole budgies worth £60,000 from a Hampshire home.
The 25-year old man has been released on bail until January 2 while enquiries continue into the raid which saw 350 of the show birds bred by national expert Michael Freeborn snatched.
It is believed the creatures will be smuggled abroad and sold.
Devastated Mr Freeborn, 74, discovered his prize collection of budgerigars were taken on Monday morning when he went to check on them in their large cage less than 30ft from his bungalow in Romsey.
A Hampshire police spokesman said: “No birds have yet been recovered and we are still appealing for information about the thefts and the whereabouts of the budgies.”
Anyone with information about the theft should contact Romsey police on 101.
