Place your Rhino bid
TIME IS running out to have your chance to own a piece of Southampton’s rhino history.
Tonight the colourful Go! Rhinos sculptures go under the hammer to raise cash for three local charities.
If you have been left pining for the colourful masterpieces that brightened up the city’s streets and parks this summer – then this is your chance to snap up the last remaining tickets and help keep their legacy alive.
With all 36 life-sized sculptures ready to go home with the highest bidders, it is hoped the much-anticipated Charity Fundraising Auction will raise thousands of pounds for three charities.
Organisers are hoping the event will be as successful as an auction of the Wallace and Gromit statues in Bristol earlier this month.
When they were auctioned they raised more than £2.3m.
That amount raised by the 81 dog statues depicting animation favourite Wallace’s best friend has left Marwell hoping that buyers will be queueing up to bid for the city’s magnificent rhinos.
One statue, Gromit Lightyear, designed by animation studio Pixar and based on the Toy Story character, sold for £65,000.
Marwell Wildlife has been overwhelmed by the public’s love for the rhinos since they charged into the city in July so there are high hopes that some might fetch more than £2,000 each.
The money raised from the 36 rhinos and Business South’s mini rhino Rudy, will be divided between Marwell’s conservation projects, Wessex Heartbeat’s HIGH 5 Appeal and The Rose Road Association.
If you are unable to make the event at the Grand Harbour Hotel, Southamp-ton, in person, you can register as a telephone bidder or place a proxy bid. Tickets are £15.
