When is art not art?
WHEN is a piece of art not a piece of art?
When it is a painted rhino, it seems.
Great news the city council in Southampton has bought one of the rhinos from the uber successful Rhino Trail.
It cost the city £4,000, with half of the cash coming from Centrica who are employed to run many of the city’s services.
Although I am often labelled a Philistine (and I think they got a bad press in reality) for my campaign to sell off some of the city’s art collection, I am a supporter of art. At its heart, the Rhino Trail was a glorified arts trail. All of the rhinos were individual works and the trail acted as a living art installation. Brilliant stuff. That the city now gets to keep one of the rhinos as a piece of art for its citizens to enjoy I can only applaud.
But why has the city plundered its community fund to buy the piece instead of the money it has for arts purchases?
The arts world in Southampton just gets curiouser and curiouser.
