Diwali festival lights up Southampton with worship
11:00am Monday 4th November 2013 in News
CELEBRATIONS went off with a bang last night as Southampton’s Hindu and Sikh communities marked Diwali.
A spectacular fireworks display took place outside the Vedic Society Temple in Radcliffe Road as the festivities got under way.
Hundreds ignored the rain and flocked to the display, with many coming from across the south to take part.
The event continued with chopda pujan, a ceremony marking the start of the new financial year.
Colourful celebrations also saw worshippers taking part in the traditional lighting of hundreds of clay lamps.
Across Hampshire many more were celebrating the festival, which symbolises victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
