7:41am Tuesday 5th November 2013 in News
RESIDENTS of Hampshire came together to celebrate the Hindu New Year.
Around 300 people attended annual celebrations held at the Vedic Society Hindu Temple, in Radcliffe Road, Northam, in Southampton.
More than 150 vegetarian dishes were offered to the gods and later shared among visitors.
There was also traditional dancing by children, but the evening also honoured the Hindu priest of the temple and volunteers who have helped the Vedic Society, which organised the event.
Yesterday, the equivalent of New Year’s Day, people traditionally visit family and friends and distribute sweets before fireworks at home in the evening.
The day is celebrated by both Hindus and Sikhs.
Dhurjati Shukla, secretary of the society said: “It gives an opportunity for the whole community to be together.”
