IT was the umbrellas flying rather than the caps at graduation ceremonies being held in Southampton this week.

However, the dismal weather did not dampen the spirits of graduates who, along with their families, have been flocking to the city’s Guildhall to receive their all important degrees.

Ceremonies are being held throughout the week to honour the former students who have graduated from Southampton Solent University.

Alongside the graduates were those who were receiving honorary awards for their contribution in their field of expertise.

Among those receiving their scroll yesterday was Jojar Heera Singh Taak, local solicitor, chairman of the Hampshire Asian Network and former Solent student.

He was honoured with a Master of Laws at yesterday’s ceremony.

This week has also seen captains of industry and commerce honoured with Jimmy Chestnutt, receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Business from Southampton Solent University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the city of Southampton.

Director general of the Southampton and Fareham Chamber of Commerce and Industry Capt Chestnutt has also been appointed as the chief executive for Hampshire Chamber of Commerce.

On receiving his honorary degree, he said: “I’m very proud to accept this honorary Doctor of Business from Southampton Solent University.

In my work with Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, it’s been a privilege and a pleasure to work so closely with this university and its students.”

“Southampton Solent University has gained a reputation for understanding business, knowing what it wants and needs. Employers don’t employ degrees, a degree gets you noticed, but it won’t get you the job alone – employers employ people and Solent prepares its graduates with industry-focused skills to enrich businesses.”

Journalist, television presenter and Solent graduate Ricky Boleto received the honorary degree of Master of Arts earlier this week, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to broadcasting.

He said: “During my three years at Solent, I learnt and honed the skills needed to tell powerful stories – even during fire drills in the halls of residence I was pestering firemen for a quote for a potential story.”

He added: “I wish everyone the best of luck in their future careers. Don’t let go of those passions you had at the beginning of your degrees – keep that drive and go for it!”
