A GROUND-BREAKING British artist has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Southampton Solent University.
Eileen Cooper, a painter and printmaker, is Keeper of the Royal Academy. Appointed in 2011, her duties include the running of the Royal Academy Schools and she is the first woman to hold the post since its creation in 1768.
On November 21 she received an honorary degree of Doctor of Arts in recognition of her outstanding contribution to art.
She told the university’s students: “Please remember it is not a race. Of course it helps to have self-confidence, self-belief, determination and ambition, but there are many ways to make a successful life and to fulfil one’s own potential. Finding a way forward is the key, and on your own terms. Be inspired by what life offers and the opportunity for lifelong learning through one’s work."
The university awarded honorary degrees to academics and professionals who have made an outstanding contribution in their field during its graduation ceremonies at Southampton Guildhall in November.
