HAMPSHIRE sailors will be taking to the waves once again as the latest leg of the Round the World Clipper Yacht race gets under way.

Those taking part only had a week on dry land after their storm-hit race from Cape Town to Albany in Western Australia before sailing on to Sydney tomorrow.

They are expected to arrive on December 12 before leaving on the next leg to Hobart near Brisbane on December 29.

Twelve competitors from the county are taking part, including 18-year-old Edward Collison from Wickham, 19-year-old Jacob Carter from Portchester as well as former Southampton City College principal Lindsey Noble and Steve Mabe, 47, Dave Richards, 63, Kate Hepworth, 40, and Charlie Pickering, 58, all from Southampton.

The 40,000-mile race, skippered by professionals but crewed by novices, is expected to end in London’s St Katherine’s dock in July next year, where it began nearly a year before.
