FROM superstar footballer David Beckham and actress Keira Knightley to singer Elton John and Prime Minister David Cameron, it contains 33,000 of the country’s most influential and noteworthy people.

Every year the Who’s Who book details a comprehensive list of the most influential and inspirational people in the UK.

And this year, six people from Hampshire are among the 1,000 new faces being added to the 2014 edition.

Hampshire police chief Andy Marsh and two top scientists at the University of Southampton are among those taking their place in the prestigious list.

The widely-respected reference book has been published every year since 1849, featuring short biographies on everyone from prime ministers and academics to rock stars and writers.

Every one of the “biographees” supplies the original information for their entry, while the book’s editors may also make changes and additions.

People included in the book – who remain in Who’s Who until they die – can update their information every year.

Included in this year’s intake is Andy Marsh, who was appointed as Hampshire’s new Chief Constable earlier this year, having been the force’s deputy chief since 2010.

In his nine-line entry, 47-year-old Mr Marsh lists his interests as rowing and fly-fishing.

Professor Ian Wright, director of Science and Technology at the National Oceanography Centre at the University of Southampton, also makes his debut.

A marine geologist, 54-year-old Prof Wright has carried out numerous studies in an attempt to understand the relationship between the ocean and the earth.

He is named alongside his colleague Professor Timothy Leighton, a professor of ultrasonics and underwater acoustics.

Earlier this year the Daily Echo reported on how a team led by Prof Leighton had made a major technological breakthrough, using dolphins’ sonar to create a new system which could help detect explosive victims or earthquake victims.

Also on the list is Anthony Wilmott, from Braishfield near Romsey, who is a senior archaeologist at English Heritage.

A leading authority on the Roman and medieval periods, he was named as the Archaeologist of the Year at last year’s Current Archaeology Awards.

Hotelier Robin Hutson has been named in the list for achievements with a number of local hotels.

The chairman and chief executive of the Lime Wood Group and Home Grown Hotels celebrated last year as the Lime Wood Hotel near Lyndhurst received the AA Hotel of the Year England award.

And Clive Grinyer, a Southampton-born director of customer experience at London-based communications giant CISCO, also makes it into Who’s Who.

A former director at Samsung, Orange and TAG McLaren, he works across the retail, financial services and public sectors on technological innovations.
