OFFICERS swooped to arrest ten people on the first day of Hampshire Constabulary's anti-drink and drug driving campaign.

Police have charged five people with drink-driving so far, one has been bailed, one suspected offender remains in custody pending further enquiries, and three people were released with no further action taken.

The oldest detained was 54 while the youngster was aged 28.

The number of arrests is one less compared to arrests made during the same 24-horur period last year.

Chief inspector Andy Bottomley of Hampshire Constabulary's Roads Policing Unit, said: “This December will see more police resources poured into drink-drive operations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight than ever before.

“Roads policing officers will be out on drink-drive operations throughout the night and early mornings tackling offenders and will take every opportunity to breathalyse drivers.

“This is only the start of the campaign and we will be pouring resources into our joint drink drive operations with our partners Thames Valley Police than ever before.

“Our message is simple, don't drink and drive.

“Not realising you're still the over the limit won't stop you from being banned from driving, a hefty fine and a criminal record - ignorance is not an excuse.”

This year's “Is it worth the risk?” campaign was launched on December 1 and is marked with a purple ribbon in remembrance of all those who have died as a result of drink and drug impaired driving.

Members of the public are reminded to text 80999 to report anyone they suspect of drink or drug-driving. Anyone witnessing a drink-drive offence in progress can call 999.
