IT WAS a fitting tribute to one of Southampton’s leading cyclists.

Friends and fellow cycling club members got on their bikes to lead the hearse at the funeral of Geoff Shergold yesterday.

Mr Shergold was a stalwart of the cyclo-cross scene in the south for more than 40 years and won the Wessex Championship seven times.

Friend and pallbearer Kerri Wallis, of Crabwood Cycling Club, said: “It’s a fantastic tribute to him. He would be looking down and smiling, and probably wondering why we aren’t going off cycling together afterwards.”

The funeral took place at Southampton Crematorium and guests came from as far as Manchester and Birmingham to say goodbye.
