‘What on earth happened’ at Co-op bank?

Daily Echo: Paul Flowers Paul Flowers

WINCHESTER and Chandler’s Ford MP, Steve Brine, has urged the Prime Minister to find out “what on earth happened” at the Co-op bank.

At Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons last week, he asked David Cameron if he shared his “disbelief” at the actions of Rev Paul Flowers.

Mr Flowers, a Methodist minister who led the bank for three years, is facing a police inquiry after he was reportedly caught buying and using illegal drugs.

Mr Brine said: “What can my right honourable friend now do to find out how on earth that happened?”

The Prime Minister said the Chancellor, George Osborne, will work with regulators to examine the most appropriate form of inquiry.

Mr Cameron said: “Why was Reverend Flowers judged suitable to be chairman of a bank, and why were alarm bells not rung earlier?”
