BISHOP’S Waltham is now officially a Safe Place for vulnerable people.

Shops have signed up to become Safe Places, where disabled and vulnerable people can go and wait for a carer to be called if they are lost, harassed, feeling scared or confused.

The Safe Places can be recognised by a distinctive yellow sticker in their window.

People wishing to use the sche-me can request a card on which they write their name and the number of two trusted contacts.

When they show their card to staff in the Safe Place, a phone call can be made to either of those numbers so that the person can be reassured or collected.

The scheme was launched in Bishop’s Waltham in November and a special event was attended by over 50 people.

Cards are free and are available through Winchester Mencap at the Discovery Centre and Winchester Area Community Action at the Colebrook Centre.
