Fears over 'over commericalisation' of River Hamble

Daily Echo: River Hamble River Hamble

A SOUTHERN Parishes councillor has raised concerns over the future of the River Hamble.

Diane Andrews said she was concerned about the commercialisation of the river and the lack of general public access.

Ms Andrews, a parish councillor in Burseldon and secretary of the newly-formed Hamble River Valley Forum, told Winchester city council Cabinet: “The balance has swung too far in favour of commercial interests to the detriment of others.

“We fear for the river’s future as a boat park with bigger pontoons and bigger boats, many of which never leave their moorings.

Ms Andrews added: “We should look at access to the river for small craft such as rowing boats, kayaks and canoes, and better opportunities for people of limited means to sail safely and have moorings for young people and children to enjoy the river and for disabled people to access the river.”
