IT’S Christmas Eve all month at The Nuffield!

A magical world unfolds where toys come to life and gingerbread soldiers do battle with armies of mice.

Festive family play The Nutcracker is previewing before its grand opening night on Tuesday.

The mysterious Uncle Drossermeier gives Clara an enchanted nutcracker as her present, which leads her to journey far and wide in search of her elusive Prince.

The classic tale is brought to life with colour and music by one of theatre’s fastest rising directors Blanche McIntyre, the recipient of both the Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Newcomer and the Off West End Theatre Award for Best Director.

Among her company are two recent graduates from some of the UK’s top drama schools brought to Southampton for a residency under the new Impulse scheme.

Hannah Lee, pictured, who plays Clara and Mauselinik in The Nutcracker, told Your Entertainment: “There’s some incredible magic in this show. It’s beautiful and there’s something for everyone. Children will love it, but it’s quite a dark adaptation in some ways.

“This is definitely an adaptation for the Harry Potter generation, so be prepared for some darker magic.

“It’s a brave and loyal adaptation which, while faithful to the 19th Century tale, is the story of a modern and less traditional family. It makes for an interesting dynamic.”

Alex Griffin-Griffiths, the show’s Fritz and Otto, added: “It’s the wonderful tale of good versus evil and it’s perfect for Christmas time.

“The Battle of the Toys is particularly memorable!”

The Nutcracker runs until Saturday January 12.
