IT was sheer luck that nobody was killed.

That’s the view of residents living in a Southampton tower block after a large fridge was hurled from the window of one of the flats in Redbridge Towers.

“Mindless idiots” are thought to have pushed the fridge off a balcony and sent it crashing down on to the pavement in the car park below in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Miraculously nobody was injured and the large appliance narrowly missed a van as parts of it shattered into pieces on impact.

It is understood to be the second incident of its kind in the past week, with residents reporting how a toaster was thrown from one of the flats just days ago and smashed the windscreen of a car parked below.

Police were alerted to Sunday morning’s incident which they say happened at 12.40am and spent yesterday leafleting all homes inside the 187ft, 20-storey block as they launched a hunt to find those responsible.

One angry resident who did not want to be named, told the Daily Echo: “How nobody was killed is a miracle. If someone had been stood in the car park when that came flying out of a window way up above, they wouldn’t have stood a chance. I hope the police find them and lock them up.”

Another resident said: “Last week some lady had to replace her windscreen because of a flying toaster. This week someone pushed a fridge off the balcony. The council is doing nothing. “Wardens or someone responsible for council flats should have a walk around to check who’s missing a fridge and then they would know who is putting lives at risk. I wonder how long we need to wait – until someone dies? Maybe then the city council will install video cameras.”

Last night officers said they believed people living inside the block knew who was responsible and urged them to do the right thing.

Sergeant Tim Adams from Shirley police safer neighbourhood team, said: “Even just a toaster landing on your head having been thrown from such a height could kill you, let alone a big fridge.

“The area around Redbridge Towers is a very busy place and there are people walking about all the time. It is quite fortunate that nobody was seriously hurt.

“Somebody will know where that fridge came from and hopefully they will do the right thing and pick up the phone or come forward.”
