Man dies after boat lake tragedy at Lakeside Country Park in Eastleigh

Daily Echo: Major emergency at Hampshire park Major emergency at Hampshire park

POLICE have tonight confirmed that a 28-year-old man has died in hospital after being pulled from the water of a Hampshire country park.

The man was rescued from the boating lake in Lakeside Country Park in Eastleigh this afternoon after a two hour operation involving police, fire and paramedics.

Earlier this evening there were confusing reports from Hampshire Constabulary, who initially announced the man had died shortly before 7pm.

That information was later retracted by the force when it became apparent that doctors were still fighting to save his life at Southampton General Hospital.

But shortly before 9pm tonight a Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson confirmed that the man has since died.

As reported throughout today, the drama unfolded at the Southampton Road park at 12.30pm following a 999 call reporting that a man was in the water and in serious trouble.

The police helicopter was called in to help with the rescue, which finally drew to an end at around 2.30pm when the man was recovered and rushed to hospital by ambulance.

did you read the article, he's not dead.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was then taken to a better hospital where his condition was upgraded to "alive."

Earlier this evening, a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary told the Daily Echo that the 28-year-old had died

When I posted they said he had died, so don't blame me

Just to clarify for those joining the thread now, He was reported as dead earlier this evening. The story was then altered to report he was in fact still alive, hence the 'condition downgraded' comments but fighting for his life. The report has now been changed again to report he has in fact died

Somebody needs to get their knuckles rapped!

There were people on the Echo forums earlier who knew the guy, first they were told he was dead, only to be subsequently told he was still alive. Now that he's confirmed dead they will have been through a roller coaster of emotions.

I'd expect a public apology to the family over this as a bare minimum.

He is dead, sadly. The Echo were only reporting what Hampshire Police were saying, as the article now stated.

RIP fella
