SPECIALIST dog units have helped with fresh searches of a Hampshire shoreline where body parts were discovered washed up.

Police returned to Weston Shore yesterday to scour the area again, 24 hours after a dog walker made the gruesome discovery on Sunday morning.

As reported by the Daily Echo, the shocked member of the public called 999 after finding the human remains close to Southampton Sailing Club at 8.30am.

The area was cordoned off for several hours while forensic searches were carried out and the items removed to hospital.

On Sunday evening a pathologist began a complex post mortem examination to determine if the remains belonged to a man or woman.

Intricate DNA testing also got underway to try and identify the dead person.

But further details about who it might be might not be known until tomorrow at the earliest.

Since the discovery there has been speculation among friends of missing man Chris Spikesman who fear they might finally discover what happened to him.

The 27-year-old from Languard Road, Shirley, is believed to have drowned after he leapt from the Itchen Bridge in Southampton on January 7 this year. His body was never recovered despite extensive searches at the time by police and coastguard teams.

Hampshire police said further searches of the area yesterday did not find anything.

A spokesman said they continue to keep an open mind about who the remains belong to and how they may have died, but say there is nothing to suggest the death was suspicious.

A spokesman said enquiries remain focussed on establishing the identity of the deceased but that a review of missing person files was central to their investigation.
