They are the pride of Hampshire.
Firefighters, volunteers and members of the public were recognised for their bravery, quick thinking and long service at a glamorous awards ceremony last night.
Two firefighters and two police officers who rescued an elderly lady from a burning building were among those to receive awards at Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Celebrating Success 2013.
The annual celebration, now in its eighth year, was held for the first time at the service’s headquarters in Eastleigh.
As well as a string of awards recognising personal achievements and individual courage, there were also a number of certificates handed out for long service, including a 40-year award for Alan House, formerly Deputy Chief Fire Officer.
Giving his “heartfelt thanks” to everyone in the service, Chief Fire Officer John Bonney said: “Hampshire has a very proud history of delivering a very high standard of service to our community and I know how hard everyone across the service works to keep it that way.
“Keep up the good work and tonight celebrate your success.”
The Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan, who handed out several awards, thanked the service on behalf of the county, and praised firefighters’ courage and commitment.
