FIREFIGHTERS are back on duty today after a day of industrial action.

The second night of the Fire Brigades Union's (FBU) industrial action ended at 10pm last night.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said there were an average of 29 fire appliances available to respond to emergencies across the county the during strike action.

Crews were able to respond within their 20-minute target time to reduce emergency incidents, according to the service.

Assistant chief officer Neil Odin said: “We want to thank the public as people clearly heeded our advice to make sure Christmas lights are turned off, candles were extinguished and if they were celebrating, to take a cab, and to get a takeaway rather than cooking when they got home.

“People took responsibility to make sure that they and their loved ones were safe.”
