A WOMAN was assaulted by a man who was trying to steal her pet puppy.

The 25-year-old woman was approached by a man who tried to grab her sprocker spaniel as she walked along a Hampshire road.

But when the woman fought back she was slapped in the face. She managed to keep hold of her dog and ran away.

The incident took place between 4.20 and 4.40pm yesterday on Forton Road at the junction with Moreland Road in Gosport.

The woman was uninjured but shocked by the incident.

The suspect is white, 30 to 40 years of age, short shaved hair and 5ft 9in to 5ft 11in with a stocky build.

Detective Constable Neil Harrison said: “This is an unusual incident and believed to be opportunist.

“The roads would have been busy at this time and therefore we appeal for anyone who has witnessed the incident or who may have information to make contact.

“We have not received any similar reports of this nature in Gosport.”

Anyone with information can contact Det Con Harrison at Fareham police station on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
