A SOUTHAMPTON logistics firm has shelled out £1m on a new fleet.

Meachers Global Logistics has expanded its operations by buying seven new haulage lorries and 24 new trailers.

The firm is one of the country’s biggest logistics providers and operates a number of services, including freight forwarding, supply chain management and also distribution.

Earlier this year the Mauretania Road-based company extended its contract with Lionvest, the country’s largest importer of wooden flooring.

And it also recently announced a three-year contract extension with Huhtamaki, the world’s largest packaging company.

Now, in a bid to expand its distribution capabilities, firm bosses have decided to splash out £1m on new lorries and trailers.

The firm has taken delivery of four Mercedes Actros 2546 lorries and two Volvo FH400s, while a further Volvo will also be added in January next year.

And they have also completed the purchase of 24 new trailers, including 20 Lawrence David 14.6-metre trailers and four Lawrence David skeletal trailers.

The firm’s managing director, Stuart Terris, said: “We have experienced a strong period of growth in 2013 and this is reflected in our fleet replenishment and acquisition programme.

“The move reflects a desire to standardise our fleet, and this strategy is expected to produce significant operational benefits to the business.”
